Lustron Homes™ were mass-produced residential structures manufactured by the Lustron Corporation of Columbus, Ohio, between 1948-1950. Their basic structure (walls and roof trusses) was steel, and all external and internal elements – including the roof, walls, ceilings, cabinets, shelves and sliding doors – were made entirely from porcelain-enameled steel. The windows were framed in aluminum.
Customers would order a Lustron Home and it would be delivered to their location in about 3,000 pieces on a specially-designed truck, along with all the screws. It would take about 400 hours to assemble the house on a pre-prepared foundation. The customer provided their own flooring.
A total of 2,498 Lustron Homes were produced, and each one was individually numbered.
The house to the right is the exact same model owned by projeSGCW, but was built in Toldeo, Ohio.
Here is a Lustron Home under construction (unknown location and year).
The floor plan is spacious and compact at the same time, approximately 1,000 square feet of living space.
